What is an Equipment Performance Evaluation (EPE)?

An Equipment Performance Evaluation, or EPE, is a required safety test performed on x-ray equipment to verify it's operating within Texas radiation safety standards. Think of it as a state-required checkup for your x-ray machine; confirming the radiation output, image accuracy, and safety mechanisms all meet regulatory limits.

Texas DSHS requires EPEs at set intervals after installation, reinstallation, and after any repair that could affect radiation output.

Who Needs an EPE?

What We Test & What You Get

Every Texas Medical Equipment Repair EPE covers all tests required by Texas DSHS for your equipment type, with complete documentation delivered to your facility within 30 days.

Confirms your unit delivers consistent radiation output every time, across repeated exposures under identical settings.

We take four measurements under identical technique factors and calculate the coefficient of variation (C). A result at or below 0.05 means your unit is performing consistently and predictably, protecting patients from unintended dose variation.

25 TAC §289.232(i)(6)(I)

Verifies the exposure timer fires accurately, preventing overexposure from a timer that runs long or underexposure from one that cuts short.

Tested against manufacturer specifications when available. If specs aren't obtainable, the timer must fall within ±10% of the indicated time, tested at 0.5 seconds. We take four measurements and document results in milliseconds or pulses.

25 TAC §289.232(i)(6)(H)(i)

Confirms peak kilovoltage is accurate across the unit's operating range, directly affecting image quality and patient dose.

We test at a minimum of three kVp stations across the unit's operating range (or all stations if fewer than three exist). Each measured value must fall within ±10% of the indicated setting, or meet the manufacturer's published specification if available.

25 TAC §289.232(i)(6)(J)

Ensures the x-ray tube holds its position during exposures, preventing motion blur and off-axis radiation.

We verify the tube remains physically stable in all positions during exposures, with no drifting or unlocked movement. For units designed to move during exposure (such as panoramic machines), we confirm the movement is smooth, controlled, and functioning as intended.

25 TAC §289.232(i)(6)(K)

Verifies the x-ray beam is properly restricted to limit radiation exposure to only the intended area.

For intraoral units: the x-ray field must be no larger than 7 cm at the cone tip if the SSD is 18 cm or more, or 6 cm if the SSD is less than 18 cm. For panoramic units: the beam must be contained within the image slit in the transverse axis, and misalignment in the vertical axis must not exceed 0.5 inches total.

25 TAC §289.232(i)(6)(L), (i)(11)(B), (i)(12)

Measures the actual radiation dose at the patient's skin surface and confirms it falls within Texas regulatory limits.

Tested using the technique settings your practice actually uses for an average adult intraoral bite wing examination. The calculated entrance exposure must not exceed 450 mR when using 60 kVp or above, or 600 mR when using less than 60 kVp. This test applies to intraoral units only. Panoramic and cephalometric units are not subject to EE limits under current dental rules.

I had a malfunctioning unit that was only 2 years old where the manufacturer had told me I needed to purchase a new one. I reached out to Kal at Texas Medical Equipment Repair and within 10 minutes he was able to diagnose the problem. He helped me order the part needed and now the X-ray unit works again, easily saving $6,000 from having to buy a new one. I have already started referring all of my colleagues to Texas Medical Equipment Repair!

Urgent same-day repair

Finding someone to repair my chiropractic tables in Austin has always been difficult. I searched around and found Texas Medical Equipment Repair and have been 100% pleased with Kal and his work. He found and fixed problems that other repairmen missed and/or told me were already fixed. He found the problems, explained them very thoroughly and completed the repairs as planned. I've already recommended him to colleagues in the central TX area and will continue to do so.

Fixed what others missed

Kal successfully repaired three C-arms in our department that had been malfunctioning for over seven years — an issue that even the manufacturer couldn't resolve. He quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem. I highly recommend Kal for medical equipment repair needs.

Solved 7-year C-arm issue manufacturer couldn't fix

Very responsive to my call and sent someone out the same day so we didn't have to cancel any procedures the following day. Very professional! From start to finish, this was handled very well and efficiently. I'm confident that if there are any issues in the future, they'll be resolved. That's a very good feeling.
